THE ORACLES OF ZECHARIAH AND MALACHI: UNDERSTANDING THE MESSIANIC MISSION AND MINISTRY OF JESUS

Sunday, March 18, 2018

Zechariah gave two extended sermon-like discourses (oracles) in Zechariah 9-14 on the coming Messianic Era (Day). Zechariah reported the first discourse in Zechariah 9-11. The second discourse followed in Zechariah 12-14. Zechariah began each with the characteristic “the oracle of the word of the Lord” (9:1 and 12:1). The first oracle (9-11) emphasized the initial appearance of the Messiah and his rejection by Israel. The second showed the acceptance of the Messiah by Israel and the establishment of the Messianic Kingdom in Jerusalem at his coming to rule and reign over Israel and all mankind. Kenneth Barker maintained that the “future orientation is rendered more certain by the eighteen occurrences of the phrase ‘on that day.’”
